Countries With the Most International Tourists

Traveling the world and experiencing the diverse vistas and cultures that the people of the world have to offer has been said to broaden the intellect. Tourism can refer to both foreign and domestic pleasure travel, and it has existed for as long as humanity.

World Tourism Day is a chance to broaden your horizons, discover a destination you’ve always wanted to visit, and finally make the time to do so. So, discover your inner traveler and go see the places you’ve always wished to see.

Tourism is expected to increase at a three percent annual rate until 2030, and this is a trend that will only continue to grow. This expansion can be ascribed to a variety of factors. This includes an increase in the global middle class and a decrease in the cost of transportation, especially air travel.

The increased adoption of labor rights in many countries, as well as the inclusion of the right to holidays in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, have both played a part. Despite challenges such as pandemics, natural catastrophes, and global economic crises, the tourism industry has grown almost indefinitely.

World Tourism Day was created to pay tribute to the tourism industry, encourage people to travel, and honor those who work in the tourism sector and enable us all to achieve our goals of visiting various locations around the world.

World Tourism Day has a new theme each year. In 2019, for example, the topic was Tourism and Jobs – A Better Future for All. This encourages individuals to concentrate on employment creation in the tourism industry.

The United Nations wished to encourage the development of new policies to address the current mismatch between tourism skills taught and skills required, as well as to incorporate and represent technological advances.

The UN also wished to create more and better jobs, especially for young people and women. As a result, we strongly advise figuring out what the theme for World Tourism Day is. This can provide you with ideas for the best method to commemorate and observe World Tourism Day, as well as contribute to the cause.

Tourism has existed for as long as there have been distant locations to visit and experience. It was initially the domain of the wealthy, as travel was difficult and expensive, but it provided opportunities to learn new languages, try new cuisines, and generally see what was available.

Tourism can be traced back to the Shulgi era in Ancient China, when Kings went to great lengths to protect roads and construct rest stops for travelers. Travel became even more important for religious reasons during the Middle Ages; Buddhism, Islam, and Christianity all had pilgrimage traditions that required long journeys for health and spiritual development.

The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) established World Tourism Day to support sustainable, responsible, and universally accessible tourism. Tourism benefits both tourists and the places they explore, and it is a major driver of economic growth.

To that end, they’ve created the Global Code of Ethics for Tourism, which aims to increase the benefits of tourism while minimizing its impact on the people, cultures, and environments of the places people travel and experience.

World Tourism Day has been observed annually for many years. It was agreed at the third session of the UNWTO General Assembly that World Tourism Day would be established. This occurred in Torremolinos, Spain, in September 1979.

As a result, the first World Tourism Day was held the following year, in 1980. The date was chosen to correspond with a significant milestone in global tourism, the anniversary of the adoption of the UNWTO Statutes on September 27, 1970. It is also a good option because it marks the start of the season in the southern hemisphere and the end of the high season in the northern hemisphere.

According to the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), the most visited destinations by international tourist arrivals in 2019 were:

  • France – 89 million visitors
  • Spain – 83.7 million visitors
  • United States – 79.3 million visitors
  • China – 65.7 million visitors
  • Italy – 62.1 million visitors
  • Turkey – 51.2 million visitors
  • Mexico – 45 million visitors
  • Germany – 39.6 million visitors
  • Thailand – 39.8 million visitors
  • United Kingdom – 36.3 million visitors

Spain, one of the top five most visited countries, will be feeling the heat in this regard; international visitors spend approximately $81 billion in the country each year. This accounts for more than 16% of overall exports, compared to less than 10% for France and Italy.

However, these figures pale in comparison to Saint Lucia, where foreign tourism receipts account for more than 81% of total exports.
